Phipps named deputy chief of Forest Service’s State and Private Forestry

WASHINGTON—The nation’s 59 state and territorial foresters look forward to continuing their important work in support of America’s forests with John Phipps, the newly named deputy chief of the USDA Forest Service’s State and Private Forestry programs.

“State and Private Forestry programs support state Forest Action Plans, bolster wildfire protection and forest pest management efforts, and support state-provided technical assistance to communities and private landowners — the essential activities that protect and promote the health and productivity of all America’s trees and forests, regardless of ownership,” said Lisa Allen, NASF president and Missouri state forester. “State foresters look forward to working with John to implement these critically important initiatives.”

Phipps most recently served as station director for the Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station in Colorado. He has also served as senior advisor to the deputy chief of State and Private Forestry, associate deputy chief of State and Private Forestry, deputy regional forester for the Eastern Region, and forest supervisor for the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington and the Eldorado National Forest in California. He holds an undergraduate and a graduate degree in natural resources management from the University of Washington.
