NASF’s Forest Resource Management and Forest Markets Committees held a very productive joint meeting earlier this week in Greenville, South Carolina.
The first day of the meeting featured a variety of speakers who talked about the potential of emerging markets for wood, including nanofibers and mass timber. The two committees then reviewed and edited a draft NASF position paper concerning the value of emerging wood markets in promoting the retention and sustainable management of the nation’s forests.
The second day of the meeting took attendees out into the forest. The field tour included stops at Norbord's oriented strand board plant and a local tree farm, owned by South Carolina Forestry Commission Chair Walt McPhail, that has been widely recognized as an outstanding example of good forest management.
On the third day, the two groups held separate meetings. The Forest Resource Management Committee, chaired by Arkansas State Forester Joe Fox, concentrated on Forest Stewardship Program revisions, policy updates, and future work planning, while the Forest Markets Committee, chaired by North Carolina Assistant Agriculture Commissioner Scott Bissette, focused on opportunities to enhance forest markets for all landowners.
