  1. Position Title: Project Forester I
    Location: Sumter County, SC
    Agency: South Carolina Forestry Commission
    Responsibilities: Provides forest management assistance and outreach to landowners and the general public to promote active management of forestland and mitigate wildfire risk. Writes forest management plans to produce multiple benefits including the sustainable production of forest products, clean air and water, wildlife habitat, aesthetics and wildfire prevention. Administers cost-share program and prepares reports. Assists landowners with implementation of forestry practices. Performs insect and disease activities. Represents agency at local meetings. Responds to wildfires both in-state and out-of-state through Southeastern Compact requests and western wildfire assignments. Participates in FireWise activities to include conducting wildfire risk assessments for at-risk communities in the wildland urban interface and other wildfire prevention events. Responds to non-wildfire disasters, and participates in wildfire and disaster-related exercises as directed. Assists in basic wildfire investigations, burn site inspections, participates in incident management activities on large fire events. Supports Sector Fire Management Officers on fire suppression activities. Participates in opportunities for professional growth as directed such as working with specialty foresters and participating in and/or conducting training as directed to include wildland fire training (i.e. fireline refresher). Serves as acting Sector Fire Management Officer when needed. Provides landowner services such as prescribed burning and timber marking in project area and elsewhere as directed.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry from a college or university accredited by the Society of American Foresters.
  • Required to be a SC registered forester within two (2) years of appointment.
  • Must pass a physical fitness test of walking two (2) miles in thirty (30) minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack.
  • Must obtain firefighter registration with the SC State Fire Marshall’s office.
  • A criminal background check is a condition of employment.
  • Spring 2024 graduates may be considered for employment, contingent upon receipt of a bachelor’s degree in Forestry from a college or university accredited by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) prior to start date.  You will be required to submit a certified official college transcript prior to the first day of employment.  You will be considered ineligible for employment if you fail to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Forestry from a college or university accredited by SAF or provide a certified official college transcript prior to the first day of employment.

3. Position Title: Forester II – Stewardship Forester
Location: Darlington County, SC
Agency: South Carolina Forestry Commission
Responsibilities: Develops and completes new and/or revised Stewardship Management Plans for private non-industrial forest landowners throughout the region.  Coordinates the plan development of private forestry consultants as well as other state and federal agency personnel.  Provides assistance to SC Forestry Commission foresters in plan development. Coordinates the implementation of Stewardship Management Plans on private non-industrial forest lands throughout the region. Monitors landowner accomplishments to assess implementation and the provision of technical assistance to Stewardship landowners that will move them toward “Forest Steward” status. Coordinates Stewardship educational program for assigned region.  Presents program information to interested groups such as landowner associations, conservation groups, garden clubs, etc.  Develops or assists in the development of publications, brochures, news releases, and displays associated with the Forest Stewardship Program. Assists with forest management activities and agency services within the region. Participates, as a volunteer, in the SCFC Physical Fitness Standards for fireline qualified employees as outlined in the SCFC Procedure Manual, and performs other related duties as required in support of the SC Forestry Commission’s mission and strategic plan.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry from a college or university accredited by the Society of American Foresters and two (2) years of forestry experience.
  • Must become a SC Registered Forester within six (6) months of being hired.
  • A master’s degree in forestry from a college or university accredited by SAF can be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
  • A criminal records check will be conducted prior to an offer of employment.
  • DRIVING RECORD: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.

6. Position Title: Coastal BMP Forester
Location: Colleton County, SC
Agency: South Carolina Forestry Commission
Responsibilities: Implements a BMP courtesy exam program within the assigned region/counties by providing technical assistance and conducting on-site inspections of active forestry operations. Generates courtesy exam reports for monthly publication.  Provides recommendations on active logging operations; monitors the BMP forestry program for compliance and effectiveness. Coordinates educational programs for the assigned area.  Develops and presents educational programs dealing with silvicultural, nonpoint source, pollution prevention. Monitors and accesses accomplishments of the BMP program.  Accurately tracks compliance with state BMP’s progress and status. Frequently fly major drainages to locate forest operations in sensitive areas and detect potential water quality problems; responds to forestry-related water quality complaints.  Conducts aerial surveys. Serves as the agency contact for environmental issues related to forestry in the assigned areas.  Provides internal training for staff.  Attends meetings and provides updates and reports on current issues.  Performs administrative duties related to the position.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry from a college or university accredited by the Society of American Foresters and three (3) years of forestry experience.
  • Must be a S.C. Registered Forester within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must be able to walk and navigate difficult terrain such as forestry operations, steep ground, thick brush and swampy areas.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • DRIVING RECORD: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
