Dear NASF Friends and Partners,
It is with mixed emotions that the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) announces the planned retirement of our Executive Director, Jay Farrell, effective September 30, 2026.
For nineteen years, Jay has provided steady leadership and thoughtful guidance that have elevated the association’s visibility and influence. As a professional forester, he understood the needs of our members and brought a forester’s stewardship ethic to association management. During his tenure, NASF grew from a staff of 5 to 17, adding nationally recognized subject matter experts to develop and support committees, policy, communications, and partnership efforts. NASF provided congressional testimony and helped lead coalition efforts that leave an enduring legacy of positive outcomes for State Foresters. State Forest Action Plans were established under his management and now collectively serve as a strategic plan for the nation’s forests. NASF’s historic leadership role with Smokey Bear and at the National Interagency Fire Center continue to benefit the protection of forests and communities nationwide.
Former Virginia State Forester Rob Farrell has been retained to immediately begin serving as interim Executive Director, with outgoing Executive Director Jay Farrell shifting to a Senior Advisor role to help ensure a seamless transition. The Board will launch a national search for the next NASF Executive Director shortly and will share updates.
