State foresters send Congress FY19 funding level recommendations

The National Association of State Foresters has sent letters to House and Senate leadership in support of robust Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 funding for USDA Forest Service State and Private Forestry programs.

“We believe that investments in key federal programs to conserve and improve America’s forests—rural and urban, private and public—are critically important. These investments create jobs, mitigate pollution and carbon emissions, enhance and protect our drinking water, contribute to healthy and livable communities, and encourage forest product innovation and utilization—helping the nation to foster strong economic growth in rural areas.”

In the organization’s request letters, NASF President and Oklahoma State Forester George Geissler describes how each State and Private program helps to deliver state forestry agency services as articulated in each state’s Forest Action Plan. Forest Action Plans, which were authorized in the 2008 Farm Bill and reauthorized in the 2014 Farm Bill, collectively represent the first-ever strategic plan for the nation’s forests.
