Appropriations

NASF supports the suite of USDA Forest Service State, Private, and Tribal Forestry (SP&TF) programs as a means to bolster America’s economy and improve environmental outcomes. With Forest Action Plans as their guide, state forestry agencies leverage SP&TF program dollars with state and private investments to protect forests across the United States.

FOREST STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM

Equips landowners with the information needed to sustainably manage their forestlands. In providing technical assistance to private forest landowners, state forestry agencies support active forest management, which in turn supports American jobs, wildlife species, clean water and air, renewable energy, and recreational opportunities. STATE FIRE ASSISTANCE and VOLUNTEER FIRE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

Provides crucial financial and technical assistance to states and local fire departments for wildland fire mitigation and suppression. In addition to helping ensure that the nation’s first responders are properly trained and equipped, the programs support hazardous fuels treatments that help to protect local communities from wildfire. URBAN AND COMMUNITY FORESTRY PROGRAM

Provides critical assistance to communities for establishing and managing local urban and community forestry resources. Put simply, this program helps keep trees and forests in our communities healthy. Our urban and community tree canopies benefit more than 220 million people—or 83 percent of the population—in the United States. Download the NASF fact sheet.

LANDSCAPE SCALE RESTORATION Program

Helps states address critical, landscape-scale forestry concerns identified in Forest Action Plans in collaboration with partners. Download the NASF fact sheet.

FOREST HEALTH MANAGEMENT PROGRAM ON COOPERATIVE LANDS

Leverages state efforts to restore forested landscapes and protect them from harmful plants, pests, disease, and other forest threats. Because wildfire, drought, and insects can’t be contained by ownership boundaries, forest health initiatives must take an all-lands approach to be successful. Download the NASF fact sheet.

FOREST INVENTORY And ANALYSIS PROGRAM

Constitutes the most comprehensive national forest inventory system in the world. FIA data is used to assess forest health and the spread of non-native insects and diseases, make economic planning decisions, monitor wildlife habitat, gauge wildfire risk, and assess rates of land use change. Download the NASF fact sheet.

FOREST LEGACY PROGRAM

Allows states, private landowners, and conservation groups to protect working forests through permanent conservation easements and fee acquisitions. Working forests play an important role in sustaining the economic, ecological, and social well-being of American communities through the jobs they support and the benefits they provide, including clean air and water, wildlife habitat, and space to recreate. Download the NASF fact sheet.

Section 319 NON-POINT SOURCE GRANT Program

Invests in state forestry agencies’ best management practices (BMPs) programs, which protect water resources before, during, and after silvicultural operations. These federal funds are administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and are matched by states at a rate of 60:40.  Download the NASF fact sheet.
