2007 Redesign Report Card

NASF and the U.S. Forest Service have been collaborating on the development of a new, "Redesigned" State and Private Forestry. The S&PF Redesign effort was conceived in response to the need for more progressive strategies for the environmental stewardship of the more than two-thirds of our nation's forest resource that resides in the hands of state or private ownership.

NASF Principles for Sustainable Forestry in the 2007 Farm Bill

NASF recommends an approach to the Farm Bill that encourages stronger public and private partnerships, sustainable forests, enhanced interagency relationships, and improved services to landowners to promote the retention, protection, and sustainable management of their forestland.

NASF Communities at Risk Report (Fiscal Year 2007)

NASF continually surveys all states to determine progress in identifying communities-at-risk and developing Community Wildfire Protection Plans. The FY2007 data was collected through the U.S. Forest Service’s National Fire Plan Operations & Reporting System (NFPORS), and reflects data accomplishments through September 30, 2007.

Forest Utilization & Marketing to Support Sustainable Forestry: Creating a New National Strategy (2005)

Forest utilization and marketing (U&M) assistance is integral to adequate long-term maintenance of forest health, improved forest management, and the ability to address priority issues and problems that affect all areas of forest resource management. The success of work in areas of forest resource management such as stewardship, forest health, urban and community forestry, wildland fire management and watersheds depends in part on effective U&M.

Fire and Ice: The Roles of State and Federal Forestry Agencies in Disaster Management and Response

For decades, forestry agencies across the United States have responded to and managed wildland
fires—their primary responsibility in natural resources disasters. Recently, however, they have
taken on major responsibilities beyond wildland fires. State forestry agencies are responding to a
greater number and variety of other natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, winter storms,
and tornadoes. These broader responsibilities have significantly affected the ability of some state
forestry agencies to pay adequate attention to their primary mission.
