Dear Under Secretary Sherman and Chief Tidwell,

We're writing to thank you for your efforts to promote the use of wood in green building construction and request your continued support on this important issue. Specifically, we ask that as you allocate research funding to Forest Service research units, you provide an additional $6 million above the fiscal year 2011 level to the US Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory to support wood products life cycle assessment and other green building research.

Washington, DC, September 30, 2011 - The National Association of State Foresters (NASF) applauded a new report from the USDA Forest Service showing that wood is superior to other construction materials in terms of environmental benefits.

The report, "Science Supporting the Economic and Environmental Benefits of Using Wood and Wood Products in Green Building Construction," cites research and findings such as:

NASF Resolution No. 2011 - 1: Vision for Improving U.S. Wood Production and Markets

ORIGIN OF RESOLUTION: NASF Forest Markets Committee (FMC)

ISSUE OF CONCERN: The FMC has identified the loss of US wood products markets as a major concern for the United States' forest industry and economy. Until year 2000, the U.S. share of world industrial roundwood remained stable for 40 years at 25 percent, according to the Southern Forest Resource Assessment. But over the last decade, production has declined to 20% (not including fuelwood), and values of imports have exceeded exports. Most reports indicate that U.S.

WOOD AND THE GREEN BUILDING MOVEMENT

From both environmental and economic perspectives, State Foresters believe it is important that wood products, and particularly products derived from U.S. forests, play a substantial role in the U.S. green building movement. NASF passed a resolution in 2008 recognizing the value of wood from certified, sustainably managed U.S. forests as a green building material.

Four Actions to Support Sustainable Forests: Presidential Transition White Paper (November 2008)

Background: The Nation's Forests

The United States has the fourth largest forest estate of any nation, with eight percent of the world's forests. This represents approximately 750 million acres of forestland - about one-third of the nation's total land area. Unlike other countries, 57 percent of U.S. forestland is owned by private interests; 43 percent is "public" land under the control of federal, state and local agencies. Almost two-thirds of private forestlands are located in the East, and over 60 percent of public forestlands are in the West.

Executive Summary: Maintaining and Diversifying Markets that Allow Sustainable Forest Management (Sept. 2008)

Based on research and analysis by Carla Harper, West 65, Inc.

Excerpt from the summary: The renewed interest in wood as an energy source, and the new interest in valuing ecosystem services, presents an opportunity to re-awaken the American public's understanding that the nation's forests are a strategic national resource. Some percentage of the landscape will, and should, be set aside for passive management to protect sensitive areas, ecological reserves, and wilderness areas.
