Forests in the Farm Bill

The Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, also known as the 2007 U.S. Farm Bill, was enacted into law in June 2008. NASF recommended an approach to the Farm Bill that encourages stronger public and private partnerships, sustainable forests, enhanced interagency relationships, and improved services to landowners to promote the retention, protection, and sustainable management of their forestland. Many of the new Farm Bill's provisions have important implications for the forestry community.

ISSUE OF CONCERN:
Implementation of the Forestry Title in the 2002 Farm Bill

BACKGROUND:
The National Association of State Foresters passed Resolution No. 2001-8 last year, indicating its support for a strong Forestry Title in the 2002 Farm Bill that recognizes the important contribution of non-industrial private forest (NIPF) lands. Thankfully, this year Congress passed one of the strongest Farm Bills supportive of forestry on private lands in history.
