Excerpt from the summary: The renewed interest in wood as an energy source, and the new interest in valuing ecosystem services, presents an opportunity to re-awaken the American public's understanding that the nation's forests are a strategic national resource. Some percentage of the landscape will, and should, be set aside for passive management to protect sensitive areas, ecological reserves, and wilderness areas.

Forest Markets

Participation in efforts that maintain and diversify markets for forest products is a commitment of the National Association of State Foresters. This resolve is founded on the reality that diverse and robust markets provide financial rewards to the landowners maintaining them, reinforcing their incentive to keeping forests as forests. Having diverse markets is also important for the practice of "sustainable forestry" because it permits harvesting all of the materials produced by a forest and allows for management which does not high-grade and hence degrade stands.

DOE and USDA release National Biofuels Action Plan

USDA Secretary Ed Schafer and Department of Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman released the National Biofuels Action Plan (NBAP) last week, which details the collaborative efforts of federal agencies to accelerate the development of a sustainable biofuels industry.

MD governor bans wind turbines on state forests

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley announced this week that he will not allow commercial wind turbines on state forest land. The ban applies only to conservation lands owned outright by the state and managed by the Department of Natural Resources and is not meant to discourage wind power development on other local, federal or privately owned land.
