NASF Resolution No. 1995-5: Forest Inventory and Database Management Systems

WHEREAS: The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program contained within the Research Unit, U.S. Department, Forest Service periodically collects data on forest resources in partnership with the states, and
WHEREAS: The data provides essential information on the extent, health and condition of forests on all ownership within the United States, and
WHEREAS: This data is used to help frame forest resource policy issues and related decisions nationally, regionally, and locally, and
WHEREAS: A blue ribbon panel recommended generating user group support through an expanded client base and improved service, and
WHEREAS: A readily accessible and user friendly database will enable a broader array of interests to become familiar with the forest inventory's contents and effect its broader use, and
WHEREAS: An expanded user base will increase public recognition and support for forest inventory and analysis, and
WHEREAS: Current and future personal computer technology (hardware and software) advancements provide new and economically attractive opportunities to pursue the above stated goals, and
WHEREAS: The North Central Forest Experiment Station-FIA Program is expanding the "east wide database system" to include all data variables collected (recreation, ground vegetation, roadwater distances, etc., as well as traditional timber data) during field sampling,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: The National Association of State Foresters (NASF) urges the U.S. Forest Service to continue to facilitate the development of a user friendly data base management system designed around readily available personal computer hardware and software for households and business, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That NASF urges the U.S. Forest Service to continue to facilitate the development of a broadened "east wide database system" which includes all variables for field data collected, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That NASF urges the U.S. Forest Service to advance the aforementioned efforts for applicability at the national level, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That NASF suggests the U.S. Forest Service should accelerate the pace of progress on the aforementioned efforts.
