NASF Resolution No. 1996-6: Forest Stewardship

WHEREAS, State Foresters recognize the diverse mix of forestry needs, objectives and outcomes that exist across the nation, and
WHEREAS, the specific application of landowner assistance programs must respect regional differences, and
WHEREAS, the sustainability of private forests is enhanced by the application of informed landowners carrying out responsible forestry practices, and
WHEREAS, it is the mission of NASF to meet present forest resource needs, provide for future needs and improve the management of private forest lands, and
WHEREAS, NASF landowner assistance program goals include prompt reforestation, protection of water quality, enhanced wildlife habitat, improved forest health, sound harvesting practices, integrated agroforestry, and
WHEREAS, every State is committed to providing accountability for program implementation
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that NASF endorses a forest stewardship approach to the Nation's forests, that serves national conservation goals while allowing customized delivery of landowner assistance programs, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that NASF directs that performance contracting between State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service that allows program flexibility to optimize outcomes for each State situation be developed by NASF resource Management committee for approval by NASF.
