ISSUE OF CONCERN:
Development of a Revised National Strategy for Forest Utilization and Marketing as it Pertains to Supporting Sustainable Forestry
BACKGROUND:
See Appendix B.
RESOLUTION:
WHEREAS the practice of sustainable forestry involves the convergence of many forces, one of which is the ability to utilize products generated by the management of the forest; and
WHEREAS forest utilization and marketing assistance is integral to adequate long-term maintenance of forest health, improved forest management, and the ability to address national, state, and local priority issues and problems that affect forest resources; and
WHEREAS there is currently no clear national strategy to address key issues involving utilization of forest resources; and
WHEREAS the existing infrastructure that supports national forest utilization and marketing expertise and development is eroding; and
WHEREAS the forest-based economic and environmental issues are rapidly evolving, necessitating an adaptive approach to meet these critical unmet needs.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT NASF supports the development of a revised national strategy for forest utilization and marketing by October 2006; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the USDA Forest Service jointly develop a national utilization and marketing strategy with NASF, to be completed by October 2006.
