NASF and state water, wildlife, ag associations reach out to EPA on forest roads

State Foresters recently joined with state clean water, wildlife and ag associations to send a letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson urging the agency to defend current regulations that support the established success of the state-based BMP approach to effectively manage nonpoint source pollution from forestry activities. In addition, 29 state attorneys general sent a letter to the Solicitor General as he decides if/how to weigh in with the Supreme Court regarding whether to hear the 9th Circuit decision related to permitting on forest roads.

Smokey Bear awards seek nominations in wildfire prevention work

Smokey BearThrough the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention (CFFP) program, NASF, the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council sponsor the national Smokey Bear Awards to recognize outstanding service in the prevention of human-caused wildfires and to increase public recognition and awareness of the need for continuing wildfire prevention efforts. In the world of wildfire prevention there is no greater honor. Deadline for nominations is February 17, 2012.

Senate Proposes Cutting Wildland Fire Prevention Fund after Record Decade, and Year, of Destructive Fires

A group of nine Western Senators are ringing the alarm about a 2012 proposal to cut support from two wildland fire prevention programs, the Hazardous Fuels and State Fire Assistance programs. These critical programs provide funding for work that makes people and forests safer, through thinning and controlled burn projects on National Forest System and state and private forest lands.

State Foresters Call on Green Building Sector to Drive Economic Growth through Wood Use

NASF applauded a new report from the USDA Forest Service showing that wood is superior to other construction materials in terms of environmental benefits. There is a well-established scientific understanding that wood products use less energy and provide greater environmental benefits than alternative building materials.

State Foresters Pass Resolutions on U.S. Wood Production Goals, Collaborative Forest Management, and Forest Action Plans

NASF elected a new slate of officers to its governing Executive Committee and agreed on several national policy positions at the association's 89th Annual Meeting last week in Baltimore, Maryland. Policy positions passed by resolution include goals for enhancing the U.S. share of global wood production, enhancing collaborative landscape-scale forest management, and use of Forest Action Plans in budget allocation decisions for Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act programs.
