Research examines how pine beetles affect wildfire
Matt Jolly, an ecologist in Missoula's Fire Sciences Lab, has been examining how beetle killed trees react differently than healthy trees. The problem has become more apparent as crews in Colorado battle a 52,000 acre fire where much of the forest is infested with Mountain Pine Bark Beetle. It is clear that beetle diseased forests burn faster and more intensely, but the question is how much? At six million acres each, Colorado and Montana lead the nation in pine beetle mortality.
