Maine battles spread of Winter Moth
Maine communities are making determined efforts to control the spread of the Winter Moth. The defoliating insect has been identified in two parts of the Maine coast and once the moth becomes established, it can start defoliating whole trees, and mortality becomes a significant issue.
The Harpswell outbreak is now fairly extensive and covers about 400 acres, and that’s prompted community action. Making it even harder, there’s no way to tell just what plants have been infested before the caterpillars emerge.
