Don't Move Firewood campaign in full swing for upcoming holiday and camping season

Thousands of Americans celebrate Independence Day by heading to national and state parks, campgrounds, and forests to enjoy the outdoors. Many will bring along their own firewood for convenience - not realizing that bringing firewood from home poses a serious risk to the nation's forests by potentially spreading tree-killing pests. Many states, and several federal agencies, consider this risk severe enough to implement regulations restricting the movement of firewood, and in some places violations can come with a hefty fine.

With thousands of Americans heading out to camp during the Fourth of July holiday and this summer, states urge the public to be aware and help prevent the spread of invasive forest pests such as the emerald ash borer (EAB) and pine beetle through the hauling of firewood. The Don't Move Firewood campaign was started to educate people on the dangers transporting firewood can pose by introducing invasive species to uninfested forests. The campaign urges campers to use only local or certified firewood and asks that before you go camping, you check for any firewood restrictions at your intended campsite.
