D.C. Department of Transportation recognized for social media efforts

Thursday, January 3, 2013

The Washington, D.C. Department of Transportation (DDOT), which houses the Urban Forestry Administration and D.C. State Forester Monica Lear, was awarded Favorite Government Agency in the Washington Post's D.C. Tweeps 2012 Awards. The D.C. Tweeps Awards let readers nominate and recognize local Twitter feeds representing various areas of interest.

"Our goal is to engage the audience, not just put general information out about the agency," said DDOT Director of Communications John Lisle. "It's an opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the public and educate them about the agency." DDOT sees social media as an opportunity for government to put a more human face on their agency and reach out to a different audience than a traditional website.
