Battle on bark beetle continues with additional funding in Senate-approved Farm Bill

Friday, June 22, 2012

A bi-partisan amendment to the 2012 Senate-passed Farm Bill encouraging public-private partnerships will provide additional resources that would strengthen states' capabilities to address the ongoing beetle epidemic in Western forests.

With bark beetles devastating trees throughout Colorado and the western United States, providing fuel for wildfire, there was a need to provide additional funding to mitigate the problem. Sponsored by Senator Udall and supported by Senators Bennet, Thune and Baucus, the amendment to the Farm Bill doubled the amount of money for beetle-mitigation efforts to $200 million.
