New Smokey Bear PSAs arrive in time for July 4th

The Advertising Council has joined with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters to launch a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) and an educational DVD for elementary school students designed to provide critical information to Americans about wildfire prevention. The PSAs and DVD are being distributed prior to the July 4th holiday, a time when many people go camping, have outdoor BBQs and light fireworks.

NASF participates in America's Great Outdoors listening sessions

NASF representatives joined hundreds of participants at a "listening and learning session" last week in Annapolis, MD, and Charleston, SC, as part of President Obama's "America's Great Outdoors" initiative, which aims to reconnect people to the environment and bring science-based techniques to restoring land and water.

The secretaries of agriculture and the interior, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality are attending meetings around the country to solicit input. Connecticut and New Hampshire send firefighters to Canada

Wildfire Today reports that the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands have sent firefighters to Quebec, Canada, to assist the province with their wildfires. Both states are members of the Northeastern Forest Fire Protection Compact, a mutual aid organization between the New England states, New York and four eastern Canadian provinces. Members of the Compact train together and their equipment standards and capabilities are interchangeable.

Ag secretary selects advisory committee to evaluate collaborative forest landscape restoration proposals

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced the selection of 15 advisory committee members to evaluate Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration proposals as authorized by the Forest Landscape Restoration Act. Congress appropriated $10 million this year in a national fund that will supplement local resources and leverage non-Federal support for carrying out the projects under the CFLR Program.

The fifty-nine members of the National Association of State Foresters have completed the first-ever comprehensive suite of Statewide Forest Resource Assessments and Strategies as part of a national effort towards protecting and sustaining healthy forests. The assessments provide an analysis of forest conditions and trends in the state and identify priority rural and urban forest areas and issues. The strategies provide long-term plans for addressing needs identified in the assessments through state agency initiatives, partner engagement and federal investments. Individually and as a whole, the Statewide Forest Resource Assessments and Strategies represent an invaluable asset to the nation for forest conservation decision making.

NASF and federal officials provide update on 2010 fire season

NASF President and Maryland State Forester Steven W. Koehn joined U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar yesterday for a Washington, DC, briefing on the 2010 fire season. Koehn emphasized that it is always wildfire season somewhere in the United States, and that state forestry agencies are the first line of defense in responding to wildfire. In 2009, more than 77,000 wildfires occurred on the nation's forests - 80% of which occurred on state and private forest land.

NASF leaders join international Montreal Process working group meeting

The Montreal Process Working Group on Criteria and Indicators for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests met in Hilo, HI, earlier this month. Countries shared their progress and achievements including development and release of the country reports, incorporation of MP criteria and indicator information into national policies, and utilization of MP criteria and indicators at regional and sub-regional levels.

The meeting included 31 participants, including representatives from 11 Montreal Process countries. From NASF, Hawaii State Forester Paul Conry, Wyoming State Forester Bill Crapser and NASF President and Maryland State Forester Steve Koehn presented their experiences in utilizing and refining criteria and indicators in state forest resource assessments and planning efforts.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has released the 4th draft of their forest certification benchmarks open for public comment. Deadline for input is 5:00pm PST, July 4. If approved by USGBC, the Benchmark will be the collection of criteria against which forest certification systems will be evaluated to determine which are recognized in the LEED green building certification program. Mass. releases biomass sustainability study

The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources has released a Biomass Sustainability and Carbon Policy study, which it commissioned in November 2009. The study was performed by a research team led by the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences. Findings indicate that the use of sustainably harvested forest biomass to replace oil heat would likely begin to yield benefits in greenhouse gas emissions reduction in as little as five years, but electricity from biomass compares unfavorably with fossil fuels, including coal.

EPA emissions standards for boilers

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a set of regulatory proposals under the Clean Air Act to reduce emissions from boilers, process heaters, and certain solid waste incinerators. Under this proposal, new and existing biomass boilers would be required to meet certain emission limits for carbon monoxide and particulate matter. EPA is seeking feedback on these draft emission standards in a Federal Register notice; comments must be received on or before July 19.

New staff at NASF

NASF is pleased to welcome three new employees to the Washington, DC, office:

Tonya Ross is NASF's new part-time Administrative Assistant. Previously an employee of Porter-Novelli, Tonya holds an MFA from Ohio University's Professional Actor Training Program, and a BFA in acting from the University of Wisconsin.

Chanda Hubbard, a recent graduate from Old Dominion University with a bachelor's in finance, is NASF's new Fiscal Specialist. Chanda is currently working towards her MBA at the University of Mary Washington. 

NASF's new summer policy intern is Charlotte Weaver. Charlotte is from Richmond, VA, and has a bachelor's degree in Wildlife Science from Virginia Tech and is halfway through a Master of Public Administration degree from Virginia Tech's Center for Public Administration and Policy.

Two state foresters receive NASF Foundation Harvard fellowship

The NASF Foundation, with the assistance of the USDA Forest Service State and Private Forestry, has selected Missouri State Forester Lisa Allen and Ohio State Forester David Lytle as fellowship recipients for the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Traditionally, the Foundation only awards one fellowship a year, however the NASFF Board of Directors decided to fund an additional fellowship this year.

The fellowship supports a three-week session focused on exercising leadership and uses a case study approach in designing solutions to real life problems. Participants gain expertise in strategy and political management, creating public value, negotiation, crisis management, financial stewardship and internal capacity and performance management.
