Position Title:             Assistant District Forester

Location:                    Durango, Grand Junction, and Gunnison, Colorado (3 positions), with a potential for additional Assistant District Forester Positions in other locations.

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the District Forester, these positions will be the lead for the Good Neighbor Authority.  The Good Neighbor Authority is a national program that allows cross-boundary forest treatments and effective sharing of limited resources between federal and state agencies, to achieve landscape-scale impacts.  Under the agreement, the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) has the authority to conduct forest treatments on the 11 National Forests in Colorado, complementing work on state and private lands, and leveraging state resources to accomplish work across land ownership boundaries.  As part of the Good Neighbor Authority there is the Good Neighbor Supplemental Project Agreement (SPA) for the timber sales on USFS lands.  The SPA clarifies the various roles and responsibilities between CSFS and the USFS.  These positons will be working closely with the local USFS district office implementing the Good Neighbor Supplemental Project Agreement - timber sale preparation, implementation, administration, and close out

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the District Forester, this position will be the lead and serve as the representative for one or more of the following program areas: 

  • Forest management
  • Firewise
  • Forest agriculture
  • Community Wildfire Protection Plans
  • Forest stewardship planning
  • Grant program management
  • Urban and community forestry
  • Outreach & education programs
  • Wildfire mitigation & fuels treatment
  • State parks forest management
  • State trust land forest management
  • Pile burning on state lands
  • Insect and disease
  • Community/HOA assistance
  • Seasonal crew hiring and oversight
  • Local government parks and open space projects

Grant programs this position will administer include but are not limited to: Colorado Forest Restoration, State & Private Forestry, State Fire Assistance, Community Assistance Funding on Adjacent Lands, and other State and Federal grants. These position will provide professional, science-based assistance to local landowners regarding forest health (insects, disease, and wildfire mitigation), and prepare program related reports.  In addition, these positions will also provide assistance to other district staff in additional program areas including: Federal land forest management through the Good Neighbor Authority and District facilities maintenance.
