Federal, state and local wildland firefighters work side by side to protect American lives, homes and natural resources from catastrophic wildfires. Yet not all firefighters have the same level of liability protection in case something goes wrong on the fire line. Federal firefighters are covered under the federal liability umbrella that extends to all federal employees. However, state and local firefighters do not have access to this liability protection. This fundamental gap in protection discourages state and local firefighters from taking assignments they deem too risky in an effort to protect themselves and their families. NASF supports the extension of comprehensive coverage to all firefighters regardless of their agency affiliation and regardless of where they are fighting.
