Coalition Letter: Sherman/Tidwell - Green Building Funding (January 12, 2012)

Thank you for your efforts to promote the use of wood in green building construction and request your continued support on this important issue. Specifically, we ask that as you allocate research funding to Forest Service research units, you provide an additional $6 million above the fiscal year 2011 level to the US Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory to support wood products life cycle assessment and other green building research.

State Foresters Call on Green Building Sector to Drive Economic Growth through Wood Use

NASF applauded a new report from the USDA Forest Service showing that wood is superior to other construction materials in terms of environmental benefits. There is a well-established scientific understanding that wood products use less energy and provide greater environmental benefits than alternative building materials.

State Foresters Pass Resolutions on U.S. Wood Production Goals, Collaborative Forest Management, and Forest Action Plans

NASF elected a new slate of officers to its governing Executive Committee and agreed on several national policy positions at the association's 89th Annual Meeting last week in Baltimore, Maryland. Policy positions passed by resolution include goals for enhancing the U.S. share of global wood production, enhancing collaborative landscape-scale forest management, and use of Forest Action Plans in budget allocation decisions for Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act programs.

NASF Resolution No. 2011 - 1: Vision for Improving U.S. Wood Production and Markets

A resolution supporting the recovery of the US share of world industrial wood production from all lands and increasing its share of global wood value production to grow forest-based job numbers and the country's economy through the utilization of sustainable forest practices.

Green Building

From both environmental and economic perspectives, State Foresters believe it is important that wood products, and particularly products derived from U.S. forests, play a substantial role in the U.S. green building movement. NASF passed a resolution in 2008 recognizing the value of wood from certified, sustainably managed U.S. forests as a green building material.

State Foresters believe funding programs that maintain and diversify markets are essential investments even in challenging budget times. We support the provisions found in S. 661 that finance the development and implementation of new and commercially available technologies designed to improve the competitive position of the existing forest products industry and other manufacturers.
