Turkish firs may save NC Christmas tree industry from rot
North Carolina's Fraser fir industry is being threatened by a highly destructive rot called Phytophthora that kills thousands of trees each year and leaves the soil unusable for replanting. An estimated 50 million Fraser firs are under cultivation, and the state ranks second in the nation (behind Oregon) in the number of Christmas trees harvested. Now, more than 50,000 Turkish firs are growing in NC as growers and researchers search for disease-resistant varieties of fir. The rot has cost state growers an estimated $5 million to $6 million per year.
