Gypsy moth populations down in parts of the northeast

Gypsy moth populations in states like Maryland and Pennsylvania are down, thanks to the spread of a virus that kills the tree-eating catepillars as well as several wet springs that promoted a fungus that also leads to the demise of the larvae. The decline in the pest is not stopping state forestry agencies from taking steps to prepare for a spray-control program next spring, if needed.
