Companies compete for woody biomass in Hawaii

Six companies are competing intensely for trees that can be turned into badly needed energy and coveted wood products on the big island of Hawaii. Hamakua Biomass Energy LLC, in contrast, plans to spend about $200 million to build a 30-megawatt plant farther up the coast.
