Beetles continue to spread tree disease across South Carolina
South Carolina forestry officials say a disease that kills redbay trees is spreading across the state. Beetles that cause the disease called Laurel Wilt were introduced to the Southeast from Asia earlier this decade and have since spread from Georgia south into Florida and north into 11 counties in South Carolina. Trees often die within a month of being infected.
